Become a shoe or boot designer

Have you ever wondered what it would take to design a shoe or boot for retail sale?  It’s not an easy career and it definitely requires skill and talent outside of any formal training you can receive from school.  However, if your passionate about design or clothing (accessories) it can be a very exciting career.

When looking to become a shoe or boot designer it is a good idea to start creating a sketch pad of ideas ASAP.  Even if you decide to enroll into a fashion school it will still be a great idea to keep a notebook full of ideas you have come up with the past.  Who knows, you might be able to take one of these “dreams” and build them while your in school.

Select a niche:

When you decide to become a designer its a good idea to find a narrow niche to begin with.  Are you interested in tennis shoes, cowboy boots or sports cleats?  Find something that is interesting to you and dream big.

Work on sketching and sewing skills:

It takes much more then just a great idea to get a shoe or boot built.  Start building on your sketching and sewing skills as soon as possible.  You will also want to become familiar with the different types of materials that you can use to create different footwear.

Enroll into school:

It’s a really good idea to get some formal training in design.  Find a school that focuses on design or shoe design specifically as possible.  Here you will want to build upon your knowledge of design.  It’s also a great opportunity to build your relationships so you can find an employer to work for one day.  Many schools have career days where you can even apply to get internships.  Just imagine the type of effect it could have on your future designs being able to work on todays successful products.

Build upon your name brand:

Any time you have an opportunity to get face time with individuals in the design niche you need to take advantage of it.  Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone either.  You never know when it could land an internship, a job or even a shoe or boot design contract.

It’s also important that you enter your designs and creations into contests.  A lot of design contests are being held online as well as in person at craft fairs.  Enter as many of these as possible.  The more “press” the better.

While your in the beginning stages of your design career it might not be a bad idea to scale back on your shoe shopping.  in this situation look for discounts on shoes and boots when possible.  It’s also a good opportunity for you to get additional products for you to examine and get ideas from.  GOOD LUCK!
